8 Metrics That Every Course Creator Must Track -

Sep 1, 2022

Course designers are always searching for ways to improve their classes. One way for this is to listen to the students.

The issue is that the students you teach won't be able to tell you how it's going within your class. They'll drop out, cancel their account, or even complete the class and then disappear and you won't ever know the whole story.

Monitoring online course metrics can help you understand what your students are thinking about your course, and the ways to make it better.

It's not just about tallying up course completion rate. There is no course that will achieve an exact completion when life intervenes or when a student's motives change or the circumstances alter.

Let's look at the eight online course metrics that you ought to be keeping track of and the best way you can use the data to improve success.

Learner Performance And Progress

      Metric 1 The Course Progression

At a fundamental level those who are able to complete your class at a fast pace are most likely enthusiastic and involved. It could signal a strong courses that you could replicate or demonstrate to others.

When monitoring course progression Be sure to ask these concerns:

  • How long does it take the learner to complete a course?
  • What speed do they move through each subject and lesson?
  • What concepts seem easy but which are complicated?
  • If they are consistently dragging the course, what can I do to make it clearer?

Student Satisfaction and Approval

      Metric 2: Surveys at exit

Just because a learner finished a course doesn't mean they liked the course. Consider sending out an assessment after the course finishes (and when learners understand that their feedback won't affect the outcome of their grade.) A quick exit survey can capture initial impressions.

      Metric 3: Class review

      4-Metric 4: Instructor efficacy

The best instructors may fail to deliver online courses. Examine the way instructors respond to learner requests and how they're communicating with learners. It is particularly important to observe if instructors alter but not the material for the class. Are there any changes in engagement?

      Metric 5: Discussions and Comments

Discussion forums online are a great way students to go through material together and feel an atmosphere of belonging. Examine group discussions to see how learners are talking about and interacting with the material. Certain levels of involvement on the board of discussion could prove to be valid!

Professional Competency of Learners and Skills

      Metric 6: Quiz Scores

Metric 7 The quality of Assignment Submissions

The quality and depth of assignments helps you get the sense of whether students engage with your class. If you can, provide learners personal feedback on each assignment (or check the feedback an instructor is leaving). This can help you see what students have to overcome. It can also lead to greater success rates (and scores!) for learners who have individual needs.

      Metric 8: Certificates Vs Retakes

How long are learners engaged in the course and do they come back for more? How many finish the course and receive a certificate or need to take the test again? An impressive completion rate is a simple number you can track without needing the students to submit an in-depth review.

Does Your LMS Offer Metrics that can be customized?

  • See a snapshot of assignment and enrollment status when you log in
  • Keep track of student progress live and observe how students move through courses and keep tabs on test scores
  • Manage assignments by approving or deleting assignments
  • Advanced reports can be run and exported the course information to CSV or Excel files. CSV or Excel document
