Jul 22, 2023

Mayumi Yoshida was recently being spotted by film makers for her work. However, she claims that she started her career in the field of directing by chance. "I started out acting as an actor for actors" claims Mayumi. "There were not many characters I could choose from and no roles that I truly enjoyed that caused me to think like"Oh it's me.'" So, when an possibility emerged to raise funds to create an film that was shorter in length, Mayumi had the opportunity to take on more than just the role but also play director to tell a personal story.

"That has led to various film films festivals,"" Mayumi says. Mayumi. "It inspired me to feel like"Oh There's plenty to achieve when it comes to storytelling, and being an artist, not simply acting." Since the time, Mayumi has continued to broaden her film resume and more recently, she has worked alongside the musician Amanda Sum on artful music videos that challenge assumptions and question the form of music videos.

"The most helpful advice I've ever received from a friend not me was to say that I must be accountable for my abilities," says Mayumi. It's about embracing her craft even in the midst of self doubt. "Don't hesitate to accept the opinions of others in exchange for yourself," she adds. "You might be thinking"Oh I'm sorry, but it's no good. Oh, but I won't get in. This isn't likely. There's no confirmation the fact that this has happened. The word has been spoken to you. Now is the time to let it go. Take the shot not over and over again. The shot is highly likely to be successful."

We had the privilege of talking to Mayumi shortly before the launch of the"Staff Picked film "Different Than Before" was awarded the Jury Award for Best Music video in 2023's SXSW festival. See some highlights of the conversation below. Find the complete interview below in our piece.

HTML0 What are the subjects you'll find yourself returning repeatedly as you work?

Mayumi one of the topics I frequently investigate in my films is identity searching and often families and their drama. My films concentrate on the intimate and personal, which means that families are dynamic or stuck in the middle of generations, or intergenerational or intergenerational or cultural questions. This is my style.

What drives you?

Mayumi The film: One of the best films could be described as it's always present in time. Telling your story is like a time capsule. It will continue to be told forever, as well as others are experiencing the same experience during your absence. What I see of my experience is that I've watched a variety of films before I was born that have an immediate impact on my day-to-day routine. If I was an instrument to make stories that last for an entire lifetime, that was my purpose after creating films that I loved. I was like, "Ooh, there's more to this. This isn't just a straightforward narrative that's simply about sharing something I value extremely."

We would love to know your opinions on the Staff Pick experience.

Mayumi Mayumi experience was extremely thrilling. I believe that the film made a lasting impression for everybody as it contained a message for the social and I would like to make it available to many more people. Not only because each participants contributed countless hours into the project, but also since this was a message we had to convey as we could and. It was made public to mark Asian Heritage Month, so it is important that plenty of people watched the film and were able to experience the sentiments. The actors also contributed in disseminating the message. I really appreciated that.

I had heard about I was aware of Staff Picks and was thinking "Oh this is an amazing collection of individuals." Then I thought "Oh did I merit being there?" It makes me feel like I'm among the coolest people that gather together. Thank you to be part of this group.

What's next?

Mayumi The film coming up to me is my debut feature film, based on my debut short film,"AKASHI. It's been a long but challenging process and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to make this.
