Creative Mind: How the brain is working. From the creators of CreativeMindClass The #1 Platform for Creating and Selling Online courses.

In this interview animator Eva Munich shares her journey in reversing her artistic route and discovering her own way of working as an 3D character designer. She describes her move to London and her experiences at the Pictoplasma conference, and the way she was able to get a role as a director with Greenhouse Animation. She also delves into the details of her X-Files project, which she developed for Lemonade Insurance, and explains the process of animation as well as how she worked with Sound creator Phil Brookes.

Eva provides tips for visual artists looking to change career directions, such as selecting the method that best suits their ideas, embracing their individuality, and taking their "weirdness" seriously.

about pursuing opportunities and changing your creative career direction

Prior to moving to London in 2017, I was in a tiny town in Germany and worked as an After Effects animator. There weren't many creative challenges My skills slowed rapidly and I was extremely annoyed.

Moving into London and getting acquainted with all the wonderful animation folks there gave me a massive motivational boost. I felt like "Damn I'm with all the cool kids now, better start putting on my best."

After visiting this year's Pictoplasma event, I made the decision to enter the world of quirky character designers. The realization came quickly that my characters work best when they're in 3D and I'm learning by doing, which is hard but also very satisfying!

My work caught the eye at Greenhouse Animation, which is now representing me as director for them.

about the X-Files project and the secrets of socks that disappear

One of the very first clients I worked on in my newly found design style is my Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to design a piece for their regular Instagram collaborative with artists. As the business is a content insurer, the idea of cute household objects in danger immediately popped into my head. That's how the X-Files concept came to fruition.

I was in the winter locking down and rewatching the x-files. So, involving an abduction from the past was intuitive. However, all of the characters needed to remain in the same location to be in the same spot so that the animation loop could be closed to ensure that none be actually abducted. This was when I came up with an idea of having the washing machine explode and the one pink sock move toward the UFO.

While creating the UFO as well as giving it small legs, I saw how everything could get sucked into. The UFO has lost its sock and is retrieving it!

To me, creating a memorable story is best done by mixing different things that seem unconnected at first. Making something unplanned occur and give unanimate objects a personality by sticking silly faces on them is the most fun to me!

 The animation workflow

My workflow always starts with sketches of the characters as well as the creation of a storyboard. I turned the animation for Lemonade to help communicate the concept and timing. Then, I get to Cinema 4D and model all my characters. Also, this is where I experiment with materials and make style frames.

After the animation is completed in Cinema 4D is done, I move to After Effects to do final touches and compositing. The light beam that is pink, for example, is done by using After Effects.

Concerning the sound effects, and how to work with Phill Brookes

This was the first time I had with a sound designer, Phil Brookes and he truly did a great job! The work he did elevates the entire footage up to a new level and ties everything together perfectly! This was a fantastic undertaking to create and I'm hoping to do more projects like this one!

We've talked to Phil about his process for making sounds to be used in The X-Files project. Listen to the full interview with Phil Brookes.

At the moment, I'm learning more methods for character rigging, and how to make stunning textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I'm experimenting with the combination of 2D and 3D animation, and I'm excited to see where my character design journey leads me to next!

Artists can get tips on how to change a career direction

A few tips that I would like to offer to anyone who wants to alter directions:

  1. Find which technique suits your ideas best and learn about it! Working in motion design feels as if you have to be aware of everything in every program there is. However, that's not the case.
  2. Take your weirdness seriously and do not minimize the significance of it. Your peculiarity is distinctive. Your voice, your style and creativity are unique.
  3. Embrace your ideas. Whatever is going on in your head take it on and create it!
