Celebrating History, Embracing Progress: International Women's Day 2024
Each year, on the 8th of March all of humanity comes together to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD). It's a day to acknowledge the incredible achievements of women, consider the obstacles they face, and recommit ourselves to building a future where equality truly reigns. As we look back, the day wasn't born overnight. It's a culmination of decades of battle, perseverance and unwavering commitment. This is why we celebrate the day, and invite everyone to join us as we go on a brief journey of the long and rich history of IWD which is a proof of the ongoing effectiveness of collective action.
Starting with Seeds of Change to a global Movement
The seeds for IWD were sown during the first half of 20th century. This was the time where the struggle for women's rights was gaining momentum. On March 8 in 1857, female workers took to the streets in protest against low working conditions and a lack of conditions for women working in the textile industry. The strike demanded lower hours of work and fair wages for living. A few years later, on March 8, a march by women workers in the needle trades was organized to protest child labor, the conditions of work in sweatshops and to demand that women be able to vote. Two years later in 1910, March 8th became annually observed to be International Women's Day.
A catalyst for change
In the 20th century, IWD served as a potent force for positive change. It was a forum for women to raise their voice on topics such as voting rights, fair working conditions and pay, and access to education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.
A Day of Celebration and Action
Today, IWD is celebrated in countless ways, from awe-inspiring marches to intimate gatherings. This is a chance to celebrate outstanding women from every field that range from artists and scientists to entrepreneurs and activists. But, IWD isn't just an opportunity to celebrate, but an opportunity to take for action. It is a reminder that the battle for equality between genders is far from over. We must continue to advocate for equal opportunity, fight damaging stereotypes, and support girls and women everywhere. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" with the globally promoted hashtag, #InvestInWomen..
According to the UN, these five aspects are essential to push ahead this hashtag until it becomes outdated:
- Investing in women, an issue of human rights:Time is running out. The issue of gender equality is the most pressing human rights issue, affecting all.
- Eliminating poverty In the wake of COVID pandemic and conflicts, 75 million more people are living in extreme poverty since the year 2020. Immediate action is crucial to prevent over 342 million women and girls being in extreme poverty by the year 2030.
- Implementing gender-responsive financing: Conflicts and rising prices may lead 75% of nations to reduce public expenditure until 2025. This will negatively impact women and their essential services.
- Moving to a more green economy and care society:The current economic system disproportionately affects women. Proponents of a change to an eco-friendly economy and society to amplify women's voices.
- Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts female-led organizations are receiving only 0.13 percent of support for development.
