If I am free, I enjoy doing 30 mins to 1 hour studies or explorations where I can do whatever want to do that day. Doing this was a huge help in my development, however it also helped find the kinds of activities I enjoyed.

Nowadays, I like to concentrate on lighting, color as well as how to convey textures in a simple way so I don't have to go overboard on everything. I tend to keep my shapes as close as possible to what I see in real life However, as time goes on, I want to try to push shapes more and be more stylized with my work.
If I begin a painting, typically, I love laying out my main shapes first either in BW or just straight with the color. When I believe it's important, I start with linework initially. Once I have a good base I like to map on the light and shadow shapes onto separate layers. It is not until that point do I create or render the image, usually going from big to small particulars.

For Streets of London painting I used a similar process. To ensure clear edges and to keep the painting well-organized, I employed a large number of layers. I also put the main light layer on a separate layer.
Using layers also makes me less worried about making mistakes, but when I'm comfortable in the state of my painting, I begin to merge some elements, but only keeping those things that I believe are necessary.

Colors to me are much a "feel" aspect, and I simply go with the one that feels good. There are a variety of references that I look at to help me get the correct colours. Sometimes I combine references, and at other times I use mainly one.
It's definitely a good idea to learn about the theory of light and colour, to know the limits you can do to make your global color palette and the values stronger.

I think it's difficult to pinpoint what the secret to creating my art is... I like to experiment with different styles, mediums and subject matters and get inspired by other artists.
I'm only a few months into my art journey and is still trying to determine my identity as an artist, and what kind of style I have. The main difference in my life is that I don't really worry about it as much I used to and I'm sure that's making significant changes.
