Welcome to our conversation with illustrator designer, artist and teacher Maia Faddoul. Maia is an early-generation Canadian artist who has her Montreal studio. Her work is bright and vibrant illustrations for editorials, packaging, publishing, and more. Her style is high-contrast colorful and bold, but also is accompanied by a quiet message of social justice hidden within.

Maia is an absolute colour lover, and is an over-the-top person with her style of painting. Maia uses her art to share her thoughts, voice out about injustice, and raise attention to causes that matter very important to her. I like to think of my sketch style in terms of "High Contrast'.

I believe my style should have a vivid, high-contrast, and colorful, often with an understated message of social justice hidden within the background. I'm a huge enthusiast of color, and I'm a kind of a big-picture person with regards to my art style.

What's the most important aspect to consider when creating your illustration?

One of the most important aspects of my practice is making art that reflects my values and beliefs. I'm not the most outspoken or self-assured, so my art is usually a way to express my opinions, voice out on injustices, and raise consciousness of issues that matter a much to me.

Digital Drawing Classes

Maia uses drawing tablets and Procreate to create digital portraits. In her Illustrating Expressive Portraits in Procreate class she will teach the process of creating vivid, colorful and sometimes gritty portraits.
