Greater control of Community notification to you as well as your members

Jul 6, 2022

We've changed the settings for community notifications to improve the user experience (and less emails). Here's what's new.

How do you inform members of what's going on within your neighborhood?

You want to let your users know about interesting conversations , and get them involved with more conversations However, you must give your members the ability to control their experience and prevent notification overload. In our conversations with our founders about how crucial that you strike the right balance.

With the latest update to the community feature that you and your users have more control over the notification notifications. It means more active conversations, less flooded with emails, and a community platform that can bring you and your audience closer and closer.

Manage your personal notification preferences as a creator member

Community members and creators are now able to choose the notifications they'd like to get for every topic: new posts, new replies to posts you've made, and/or new replies to your feedback.

When you log into a community as a member, go to Settings, then click on "Edit" next to Notifications. (Creators can find this in the Notifications tab in your Account settings.)

You'll see all of the communities you are following. Just check or uncheck the boxes to choose the types of messages you'd like to receive for each area.

For example, you might want to receive notifications for posts, comments, and responses in an area that is time-sensitive like Live Events and Announcements. In other areas it is possible to be only notified whenever someone publishes a new post - or turn off announcements for that subject completely.

It is also possible to quickly switch your notifications on and off by clicking "Mute All" or "Unmute All".

Additionally, you are able to change your per-topic notification settings easily from your "All topics"page or on an specific topic page. Click the bell icon, then set your notification preferences.

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators may also choose to establish default notification settings for each subject in the community. This will give you more control over the member experience.

Instead of sending notification emails to your members for every article in each topic it is possible to choose the areas your members will be notified about and which kinds of notifications they get.

Here's how:

In the Community tab on your dashboard, select "All subjects". Then, click the "..." next topic that you'd like editing and then select "Edit Topic". Then, select your settings for notifications under "Default notifications".

Members are able to change their setting of notifications at any time to their account. If members haven't changed their settings, they'll default to the settings created by the person who designed each topic.
