Installation and painting - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Nicole Mueller is an artist from San Francisco. Her work includes large-scale paintings installation, murals, and murals inspired by the look from stained glass. Inspiring by the process, her abstract works are vibrant and saturated. They are constructed with layers of collage-like shapes. Her art explores the variety of color, states in flux, dichotomies inside painting, the transitional nature of the human condition, and the boundary between external and interior, and between the intangible and tangible.

About my background

I'm mostly a painter living and working full-time as an artist in San Francisco, California.

My professional experience includes mural painting, installation work, as well as doing arts administration and professional development.

I was a student in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) located in Baltimore, where I lived for several years prior to moving towards West Coast.

A significant portion of my mission and work involves hosting Beyond the Studio with fellow artist Amanda Adams, a podcast that aims to increase transparency in the art world by conducting interviews with contemporary artists about their career routes.

My fashion

Most of what I do is intuitive that is driven by process. abstract and highly saturated built with color and layers of collage-like forms.

I make large-scale paintings, light-activated window installations to mimic the visual effects of stained glass and murals. Through this series I'm studying dichotomies, changes in state, the threshold between external and interior, and the tangible and intangible.

About the key to making my art

I'm of the opinion that showing up consistently at your work is key--for me developing a studio practice and setting goals for myself to keep moving forward has allowed me to focus on my time whenever life gets in the way. Also, knowing when to step back and rest or take breaks (for a day, a month, or perhaps longer).
