Motion and space in illustration - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Ever since when I was a child, I've been drawn to paint and use my hands. It has been the easiest way for me to express myself. Growing in Taiwan the pursuit of an artistic profession was thought of as a negative thing and often advised by parents to take classes in the more practical aspects of art in order to avoid ending being hungry on the streets.

Fortunately, my Mom was always encouraging my pursuit of anything I wanted to do and was willing to do everything she could to assist to achieve my objectives. After coming back in the United States and graduating high school, I realized that I wanted to go after art as profession.

I was accepted into ArtCenter College of design, studied Illustration intended to go into feature animation. But along the way, I was introduced to motion graphics, and was enthralled by its versatility , as well as the amazing work that is created by people I greatly admire.

How would you describe the style you prefer?

I am still on the road to discovering a style that I can confidently claim as my personal. I am prone to want to try various new styles every now and then... For instance, one month I'll want to do something very vibrant, and then I'll explore the more natural-looking colors. I'll find myself enthralled by a particular shape driving style for a while but then one day I'll get bored of it and will want to explore something that's more based on lines.

Or sometimes I'll try to merge opposite things that seem fascinating to me like I'm on a never-ending journey to explore and learn. But after dabbling a little bit here and there, I'm noticing that there are certain designs, colours, or compositions I'm attracted to. Maybe it's the beginning of a style?

This is part of the reason why I love working at Oddfellows Sometimes I cannot believe that I'm fortunate to be part of an amazing group of individuals. In the workplace, we are often required to adapt to different styles depending on the project. almost every project is done in different styles, and I'm constantly getting new knowledge from my coworkers every day.

What is the key to creating your illustration?

I like to make drawings of subjects I am intrigued or curious in and then make my own interpretation of it.

Most importantly, I love having enjoyable. I think having fun is key to making anything and viewers will be able to tell that a creator was having pleasure making something... the extra spark.

While fighting the pandemic, watching my colleagues and our studio doing their best in helping the community, I was inspired to launch a Patreon dubbed Joy&Frens with a half of my net income goes to charities that my patrons choose. Here, I provide Tips & Tricks, process videos, and invite my friends to collaborations, and also share my knowledge.

My work is also displayed on Instagram and my website.
