A higher retention rate means more predictability of income, more relationships with the community, as well as an increased and committed member base. There are a myriad of ways to engage members online and you'll be unable to determine the effectiveness of these strategies until you try them for yourself.

That's why we reached out to Funk Roberts, a well-known online fitness instructor and active member for many years, to talk about the techniques that have allowed him to improve retention, engagement as well as revenue.

Here are some strategies Funk Robert shared with us.

1. The 'Shared Rituals' Strategy

The shared rituals are regular and repeatable events that your members participate in regularly, creating a strong feeling of belonging and community. They are like glue. help keep members returning and help them feel more connected to your organization.

The main benefits of this strategy include:

  • Creates a strong community culture
  • Inspires participation and engagement on a regular basis.
  • Retention and loyalty of members is increased.

What do you think this will look like in practice?

I run a membership program called " Over 40 Alpha." It is fitness and health-related membership program for males over the age of 40 and 50, 60 and over. I run several shared rituals within this program to keep the members dedicated to their goals and to the members of the community.

  • Sweaty Selfies: Members post pictures after every workout, sharing their commitment and encouraging others to do the same.
  • Alpha Meal posts: Members share photos of their meals and break them into macro parts to foster accountability and educate people in the community.
  • Birthday Burpees For birthdays, participants film themselves performing burpees that correspond to their birthday. It's challenging and fun and can be a source of celebration within the local neighborhood.

How do you create these common rituals with your group family members?

  • Determine the most important activities or behavior that align with your Tribe's members' objectives.
  • Use easy-to-follow prompts and hashtags to promote participation.
  • Highlight these rituals in your onboarding materials to establish expectations right starting from the very beginning.

By incorporating these shared rituals to create a lively, engaging environment that participants won't be able to go to.

2. The 'Identity Crafting' Technique

Understanding your target audience isn't just about being aware of their demographics. It's the ability to understand their wants to be a part of their lives, aspirations, and struggles. People don't just need to purchase a item or a service. They want to belong to something greater.

If you can create a distinct and distinctive brand for your community it will give your members an identity and pride in who they're becoming through your program.

People want to join an organization, they want to be understood and felt valued. In addition, they want to become part of something larger beyond themselves.

A few of the benefits from this technique include:

  • Creates a strong sense belonging
  • Differentiates your membership from competitors
  • Encourages greater engagement and retention

With the program Over 40 Alpha, members aren't just enrolling in a fitness class, but being transformed into Over 40 Alphas. This identity represents the strength of commitment, dedication as well as transformation. Every aspect, from the ceremonies to the culture is a sign of that identity creating a badge honour.

How can you ensure an identical feeling to your employees:

  • Develop a distinct brand identity that is in tune with your audience's aspirations.
  • Integrate this brand's identity to your routines, contents as well as your communication.
  • Always reinforce the brand's identity with stories, testimonials, as well as community interaction.

When members take on a new identity that aligns with their values They become more engaged within the community, which increases retention.

The 'Insider Language' Method

Every successful tribe is a unique tribe with its own dialect - an unspoken handshake that distinguishes insiders from the outside world. Developing unique phrases, slogans and hand gestures which only you and your group use will create a feeling of belonging and a sense of exclusivity. This insider language helps build a unique and hard-to-replicate culture.

One of the main advantages from this technique are:

  • It creates an impression of exclusivity and insider status.
  • Builds stronger bonds between communities.
  • Inspires retention over time by making members feel like they're part of something truly special.

Inside Over 40 Alpha, there are members with phrases like:

  • GID (Get It Done! ) The rallying cry that reinforces our commitment to action and determination.
  • "Smell The Rose": A call to slow, deep breath and take in the experience.

These aren't just catchy phrases; they are a element of the DNA of the tribe. They help create a community where the members feel that they're apart of something that is unique and distinct, something they'd like to stay as a member of.

How do you get this to happen for your members:

  • Create unique terms or phrases that reflect your community's values and objectives.
  • Make sure to use these terms in all of your platform, emails as well as occasions.
  • Help members adopt and use these phrases in their postings and in their interactions.

Creating a shared language builds the feeling of a community individuals are proud to be a part of. This is directly affecting retention.

4. The "Transformation Journey" Framework

One of the most effective methods to increase retention is to lead your members on a journey of transformation with clear milestones, incentives as well as community support. This gives them a reason to remain and keep progressing within your membership.

Some key benefits from this framework are:

  • Members are kept motivated and interested.
  • Provides a clear path that can be followed, which reduces overwhelm and confusion.
  • Encourages continuous membership renewal.

What is the best way to use this: Craft a path that leads to transformation, where every member starts from a predetermined point and then is guided to their objectives, with your support every step of the way.

This is what I'm doing for my course:

  • Milestones Make signs on the route to commemorate the progress made (for example, Milestone T-shirts which members from Over 40 Alpha Over 40 Alpha program earn at the end of each phase of the "One Year To Alpha" journey).
  • Rewards Rewards for achievements motivate the next steps.
  • Community Assistance: Ensure no one walks this path on their own by creating a community of encouragement and support.

What can you do to implement this framework for your members:

  • Create a clear and step-by-step plan for a member's change.
  • Establish milestones of significance that are celebrated with rewards.
  • Ensure continuous community support through the group's challenges, checks-ins and a sense of encouragement.

Implementing a transformation journey framework provides a reason to members to stay. The members are constantly moving towards a defined goal that is rewarded with tangible results.

"We've tested a few other tools for membership that were part of packages that we'd invested in. However, nothing can compare to the Member. I'm sure there's a lot of cool products that folks have created over many years. When it comes down to customizing, if you are using WordPress there's no way to alter this. Of course, I'm bias, but we've made millions through this software."

And they're so eager to work with new the new tools coming out. It's amazing how they do it actually. If I were to be buying an membership-related plugin now... for me, I'd choose Membership.
