News: US judge warns Google that it is going to undergo massive adjustments. Prompted to end illegal play Store Monopoly

Aug 29, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has warned Google that major changes may be made on the Android application store following an appeals court ruling on the Play Store operated as an illegal monopoly.

The Associated Press reports that Judge Donato said that he might require Google to open up alternative stores for apps that run on Android devices. This is an initiative that seeks to limit the influence of Google in the distribution of apps and cost of operating its platform. Google's monopoly of "nearly total power" generates billions annually for Google and the decision of the court could alter this process similar to Google estimating potential costs as high as 600 million dollars.

Google has voiced concern over the possibility that allowing access to its Play Store for apps may expose customers to security risk which could lead to the type of situation Google refers to as "security chaos. " However, despite these concerns, judge Donato stressed that there's the urgent need for some kind of comprehensive overhaul, noting "We are going to remove any obstacles, and that's going be the case."

The reason for this is an antitrust effort that goes far beyond Google in addition to a different issue that concerns Google's Google search engine, which is scheduled to go live in September. The judge will make an order describing the required changes for the Google Play Store in the near future, maybe within the week before Labor Day.

The article published in The Verge on the same issue emphasizes Epic Games benefiting from these innovations as well. The article also has the title which reads "Judge James Donato will issue his final decision on what Google will award the companywhich will determine if Epic is awarded within the next few weeks."
