Tamkara Adun and her community is revolutionizing the way African culture and language are taught
Learn how creator Tamkara Adun built an engaged education group and brand that is a product that helps students learn the language of the colonized African languages as well as African history.
In the year 2000, when Tamkara and her husband and children left Nigeria into the Netherlands the world was transformed. They had to be immersed into an entirely different culture. Tamkara left her position as an HR, and her children began attending an all-new primary school.
Tamkara was concerned by the fact that, in their history program the children were being taught about history through a European perspective, and didn't contain the tales of Africa's inhabitants and their achievements, or the history of civilizations.
She recalls "They knew a few things about African tradition, however, it was told as an elitist narrative that did not mention the importance of their ancestral ancestors. I wanted them to never get caught up in the tales of others that they forget their own. I wanted them to become knowledgeable and be able be able to comprehend their African background in a way which was authentic and real for them."
Eager to fill this need, Tamkara decided she would instruct them by herself. She began reading books by classic African writers, chatting with her relatives and friends as well as browsing archive websites. "As I began to teach students in my school, I found that I had a lot I was not taught," she remembers. "In the course of teaching the students I taught I had to learn about myself."
Tamkara discovered that if relatives of hers needed this data, there could be others who need it.
"It was an adventure for me. When I realized that I had no choice but to go back. The more you study, the more you realize the amount of information you don't know. I was determined to keep in the study and absorb this fresh information. It was also a pleasure to share. It's a great gift to have. You shouldn't keep only for yourself."
This belief led Tamkara to start an online venture called Odunife which means "Year of Love" in Yoruba so that she could create the notion of reciprocity within groups. There were many people keen to explore historical moments through an African viewpoint as well, and the more she shared her knowledge and helped her students, the more likely they were to be in a position to learn through the lessons she gave her students.

The contributions of the group and their questions, together with her study led to the creation of education programs and ebooks an children's book , a language school as well as the program for 1:1 coaching which expands the global understanding of African history.
A group that is co-operative when it comes to learning
The people who make up the community are the soul and soul of Tamkara's venture. The idea was born when Tamkara created Instagram, a simple social media account named Instagram . Tamkara was keen to document what she was learning even if it was only available to her users. "It was like an echo," she recalls. "I was putting my internet-based content on the web, but no one seemed to be paying attention."
Slowly, Tamkara became acquainted with other people who are intrigued by African cultural traditions with a decolonized, african-centric perspective. The more detailed information Tamkara uploaded and the more people engaged with her in conversations as well as shared with or tag the people they follow. In addition, followers began to share their experiences and personal details, creating a mutual learning community.
"It's an open-ended street that I'm part of and am still learning about."
"I created an idea which people reading comments can expand upon the idea," she explains. "It's an educational group that helps us get a better knowledge of the past and events which have occurred in the course of time."

Tamkara is gaining attention by working with creatives in her field, writing guest posts and leading with passion.
In the beginning, Tamkara contacted thought leaders she liked through direct messages or comments. Tamkara informed them about their work and how it struck her as relevant and shared the posts of their followers in order to amplify their voices. They regularly went to her website and keep coming back to her, to express their gratitude.
After that, people were able to see that she was a passionate worker. "People can tell that you are passionate about your work. This creates trust and builds loyalty. This was all about sharing high-quality content that people are inclined to share and putting my name on the lips of many users," she explains.
In just two years, her Instagram page grew by 50 to 24,000.

Tamkara's online community has been the basis of her work throughout the whole procedure. "I'm highly communicative, and I love being able to communicate for my friends and family to get in touch with me. If I'm online and online, I are able to contact me instantly. In the event that I'm not online I'll get notified by email so I'm able to reach them. You can also deliver messages via broadcast to my whole viewers, or to a group of people who may be curious about one of my services. It's changed the game."

Everything Tamkara is aware of about being an artist came from her artwork. It's quite daunting to start from scratch But there is no assurance of success before you've completed the first step .

"A majority of people could not acknowledge my vision, yet I was convinced that it was something that I was required to do. A lot of times, the brain's intuitive sense can tell us things that do not necessarily have a physical understanding of. If your mind is urging you to perform something and your heart is guided by your instincts in a certain direction, look into your intuition further, and go in that direction."
