The latest: US judge warns Google that significant changes are to be applied in the event of Illegal Play Store Monopoly -

Aug 29, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has advised Google that big adjustments will be made to its Android application store after an appeals court ruling it was illegal to have a monopoly in the Play Store. Play Store operates as a monopoly that is illegal.

According to the Associated Press reports that Judge Donato has said that he could ask Google to permit multiple stores for apps which run on Android devices. This move seeks to limit Google's control over the distribution of apps and also the billing process on its platform. The monopoly that Google has with "nearly total control" generates billions annually for Google however, the court's decision could disrupt the system, with Google expecting costs upwards of 600 million dollars.

Google is worried about its potential to open the Play Store to third-party app stores, which could expose users to security issues that could cause an issue Google refers to as "security disorder. " The judge Donato stressed the need to make a major modification, saying "We will take down the obstacles and this is what's happening."

This is an aspect of a larger antitrust push against Google and one of the most important cases that involve its Google search engine due to be launched in September. The judges are hopeful of granting an order outlining the necessary adjustments required by Google's Play Store in the near future and perhaps in the week before Labor Day.

An article that appeared in The Verge on the same issue includes a list of Epic Games benefiting from these results. There is also an introduction which says "Judge James Donato will issue his ruling based on the terms Google offers -and Epic will receive it in the next few days."
